Inkel Loom Weaving demonstration

At our November meeting Dee Sayce from Kinder Yarn, gave us a thoroughly fascinating introduction to the history and practicality of weaving straps and bands. From neolithic mans first interlacement of threads and string, through backstrap and bandweaving to the relatively more recent development of the inkel loom; she gave us a thorough tour and put it all into context, demonstrating the utility of the finished pieces as isolated straps, in traditional dress across the world and demonstrated how they were used to reinforce clothing and hems in a way many of us only vaguely recall from times when our clothes were not quite so ubitquitous or cheap.

In the afternoon, we were all able to have a go on one of Dee’s inkel looms – Marella was particularly entranced and has since borrowed the Guild’s inkel loom – we look forward to seeing what she makes.
